Why do our socks cost $20?

Let’s talk about “cheap” socks. Yeah, you’re reading a diary entry from a sock brand. You know what we mean we we say cheap. They come in a six-pack near the checkout, or shows up as a sponsored ad at the top of your feed. They feel good at first, but by the third wash they’re thinner, and just not the same as they were in the beginning. We’ve all owned them. We’ve all thrown them away. And honestly, no hate. Cheap socks exist for a reason, and sometimes you just need some socks.

But it does bring up a question we get a lot: why are our socks $20?

Short answer: we made the sock we actually wanted to wear, a sock that lasts, and that sock costs more to make.

Longer answer: every price tag is really a list of decisions. A $5 sock is built to hit a price, and that’s it. We started somewhere else, with how it should feel on your foot and what we wanted the end result to be.

That starts with the yarn. Our socks are made using Recover® Fiber, a recycled cotton blend, and some styles using organic cotton blends. Better yarn is softer on day one and still holds its shape after a lot of wear and tear. We construct them for comfort. A mid-weight cushioned footbed for all-day comfort and impact. A ribbed leg that stays up without squeezing. More yarn, more machine time, more steps. Those details are where the money goes, and they happen to be the spots that take the most wear.

Then there’s who makes them. Our socks come from a family-run factory in Portugal, people we’ve actually visited, walked the floor with, and worked alongside for seasons. Portugal isn’t the cheapest place in the world to make socks, but it’s one of the best. Skilled people, fair wages, advanced machines, and the kind of consistency that means your tenth pair feels exactly like your first.

None of this happened overnight. It took years to develop the supply chain. Some seasons the product was great, some seasons it wasn’t. Over time, and with a lot of trial and error, we’ve landed where we are today. If you shop for socks the way you shop for anything else in your closet, looking for the best thing for the money, the math flips. A $20 pair can actually be the better deal. If a cheap pair gives up after a couple of months and a good pair keeps going for years, the “expensive” sock quietly becomes more valuable. Plus all the stuff you can’t put in a spreadsheet. The pair you reach for first. The pair you’re a little bummed about when it’s in the wash.

That’s really the whole idea behind Arvin Goods. The basics are what you wear more than anything else you own. Socks are on your feet every single day, so it’s the one place where quality pays you back the most. We’d rather you own fewer, better pairs than a drawer full of ones you don’t care about.

We’re not chasing the lowest price. We want to make the best products we can with the resources we have now. Comfort first, quality always.

If you’ve never tried a pair, start with one. You’ll get it the first time you put them on. And if your drawer is already full of AG socks, you already know. Thanks for being here.
